Ep458: How I Deal with Criticism – without Eating

After receiving some strange criticism on Facebook, I decided to share about how I deal with being picked apart (usually from complete strangers), without letting it drive me to overeat. I’m a work in progress, and these are the steps I’ve learned to take so that no one has the power to get under my skin and cause me to hurt myself with food. I hope it helps you do the same!

  • Sensitivity to Criticism:
    • Acknowledging past struggles with emotional eating in response to criticism.
    • Importance of not internalizing criticism and avoiding self-destructive behaviors.
  • Coping Strategies:
    • Not taking criticism personally, recognizing the critic’s perspective.
    • Expressing gratitude for feedback and maintaining a positive attitude.
    • Processing hurt feelings through writing, talking to trusted individuals, and prayer.
    • Recognizing that everyone has their own insecurities and past experiences influencing their behavior.
  • Understanding Hurt:
    • Compassion towards hurt individuals who may lash out due to their own pain.
    • Reflecting on personal experiences of unhappiness and negativity during binge-eating episodes.
    • Acknowledging the impact of self-treatment on interpersonal interactions.
  • Resilience and Forgiveness:
    • Emphasizing the importance of facing hurt rather than avoiding it.
    • Encouraging forgiveness and compassion towards those who criticize.
    • Humorous acceptance of physical quirks like uneven eyebrows.
