Ep488: Me, a Martyr??

Do you sometimes feel like you do all the work around your home? Do you feel resentful that others don’t pull their weight? Do those feelings make their way into conversations with friends, or your spouse? In this episode, I talk about my most recent descent into martyrdom (not my best moment), and what I did to recover from it.

  • Tricia shares a recent experience where she unintentionally slipped into a “martyr mindset” while unloading the dishwasher.
  • The Martyr Mindset: Learn how subtle acts of martyrdom—like not speaking up or making snarky comments—can lead to emotional buildup.
  • Consequences of Martyrdom: The accumulation of what Tricia calls “icky residue” can create long-term emotional grime, leading to self-sabotaging behaviors like overeating.
  • Tricia discusses how she caught herself in the act, apologized, and took steps to prevent future emotional buildup.
  • Key Takeaways:
    • Speak Up: Avoid being a martyr by communicating your needs clearly and directly.
    • Prevent “Icky Residue”: Small, negative actions can build up over time, leading to emotional heaviness and poor self-esteem.
    • Avoid Grime: Emotional grime can clog your system, leading to unhealthy habits, including overeating.

Be Your Best Self: Strive to be free from resentment and martyrdom, aiming to show up as the best version of yourself.
